Manage installation of lighting systems


Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage the installation and set-up of equipment and systems required to implement lighting designs for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.

Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative, judgement and responsibility as they plan, organise and manage resources needed to install lighting systems in venues.

In some States and Territories of Australia, a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.

Testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out by a person with the relevant certificate of competency in accordance with the performance specifications of:

Australian Standard 3760: 200 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment

Australian Standard 3002: 1985 Electrical installations - shows and carnivals.

1. Plan installation of lighting systems

1.1 Clarify lighting requirements in consultation with relevant personnel

1.2 Plan lighting control systems with reference to information in lighting designs and production documentation

1.3 Conduct site or venue inspections to identify issues to be incorporated into planning of lighting installation and operations

1.4 Compile a list of resources needed to develop lighting control systems that meet production requirements

1.5 Where possible, incorporate into the planning process new developments in lighting technology and innovative approaches to producing lighting effects

1.6 Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on the installation and operation of lighting systems

1.7 Do a job safety analysis of tasks and incorporate health and safety considerations into overall planning

1.8 Develop and document, in an agreed format, a work plan for installing lighting systems

2. Organise resources

2.1 Develop realistic expenditure estimates that conform to budget allocations

2.2 Hire or purchase required resources according to organisational procedures

2.3 Identify potential budget overruns and resolve or recommend alternatives to relevant personnel

2.4 Organise crew in line with industry award guidelines

2.5 Organise the services of licensed personnel as required

3. Supervise the installation process

3.1 Supervise the connection of control systems

3.2 Monitor progress of lighting system installation against work plans and implement contingency plans as required to ensure that production deadlines are met

3.3 Ensure that all work activities comply health and safety and industry award guidelines

3.4 Progressively test aspects of lighting system installation to check that lighting effects specified in designs can be achieved

3.5 Use sight, sound and smell to identify faults in lighting equipment and accessories

3.6 Review finished installation with relevant personnel and make adjustments as required

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

plan and supervise the installation of a lighting system for at least one production or event

apply effective problem-solving techniques to the process of installing lighting systems

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe techniques for planning work when installing lighting systems into venues

suggest ways to address issues and challenges that typically arise when installing lighting systems

explain safety issues to be taken into account when installing lighting systems for productions and events

describe industry trends and developments that impact on lighting operations

explain the features of a range of lighting control systems

provide examples of where to source a range of lighting equipment and accessories

explain how a range of lighting equipment and accessories can be used to achieve different lighting effects.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to venues where lighting systems need to be installed for productions.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
